Palestinian religious leader, disciple of
Shabbetai Tzevi. He was born in Jerusalem, and lived in Gaza, where he engaged in kabbalistic study and practices. He met
Shabbetai Tzevi in Gaza and proclaimed him to be the Messiah. After
Shabbetai Tzevi converted to Islam, Nathan travelled throughout the Balkans and Italy, developing and preaching the theology of Shabbetainism which was based on Lurianic kabbalah. He was expelled by the rabbis of Venice, and returned to the Balkans. He died at Uskub near Salonica.
